Job: Budget Analyst
Job Description
Budget analysts have the primary role in the development, analysis, and execution of budgets, which are used to allocate current resources and estimate future financial requirements.
Necessary Education
Bachelor of Science Degree; although some employers require a Master’s Degree
Helpful High School Courses
Mathematics, Accounting, Business, Computer Applications
Working Conditions
- Usually work in a comfortable office setting
- Typically required to work more than 40 hours a week
- May experience stress when meeting deadlines
- Majority of work time spent independently which may be interrupted with meetings, training sessions, and travel

- Those with a Master’s Degree should have the best job prospects
- Backgrounds in business may be helpful
- Beginning analysts usually work under close supervision and have limited responsibilities
- Capable entry-level analysts can be promoted into intermediate-level positions within 1 to 2 years, and then into senior positions within a few more years
- Analysts in higher level jobs have added budgetary responsibility and can lead to a supervisory or management role
- Some budget analysts employed in government jobs may choose to receive the Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) designation granted by the Association of Government Accountants. Candidates must meet certain qualifications for this certification
