Job: Food Service/Restaurant Owner

Job Description
Food service managers are responsible for the daily operations of restaurants and other establishments that prepare and serve meals and beverages to customers. They make sure that health and safety standards and local liquor regulations are obeyed. Food service managers’ duties can vary, dependent on the specific establishment, but generally includes all of the administrative and human-resource functions of running the business.

Necessary Education
Even though experienced food and beverage preparation and service workers may be promoted into managerial positions, an Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Restaurant and Institutional Food Service Management is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Long hours up to 7 days per week may be necessary
  • Relocation may be necessary for advancement in larger establishments
  • May experience typical minor injuries of other restaurant workers

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $ 37,910
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $ 18.22

  • Applicants with a Bachelor’s or an Associate Degree in Restaurant and Institutional Food Service Management should have the best job opportunities
  • The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation awards the Foodservice Management Professional (FMP) designation, which is a voluntary certification that provides recognition of professional competence
