Job: Correctional Officer
Job Description
Correctional Officers maintain custody and supervise the conduct of inmates in prisons, penitentiaries and other correctional facilities. Officers supervise inmates during work, meals, and recreation. They escort inmates to the courtroom, prison and other facilities
Necessary Education
High School Diploma
Helpful High School Courses
English, Computer Application, Psychology, Sociology
Working Conditions
- Work can be stressful and hazardous
- Works indoors or outdoors
- May work in institutions that are well-lit, temperature-controlled and ventilated OR in ones that are old, overcrowded, hot and noisy
- Usually works an 8-hour day, 5 days a week, on rotating shifts

- 2003, Delaware average annual salary,
$31,450
- 2003, Delaware average hourly wage,
$15.12
Career Ladder Information
- Further education, experience and training may qualify officers to advance to sergeant rank or higher
- Promotion prospects are enhanced with post-secondary degree
