Job: Judge

Judges apply the law and oversee the legal process in courts according to local, state and federal statues. They preside over cases concerning every aspect of society. They ensure that rules and procedures are followed.

Necessary Education

Bachelor’s Degree, three years in law school, completion of bar examination

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in offices, law libraries and courtrooms
  • Usually work a 40-hour week, but a 50-hour week is common for a third of all judges
  • Work is often stressful

  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $58.46

Career Ladder Information

  • Judges are required to be lawyers to serve as federal and state courts’ judge
  • Judges are politically appointed or elected
  • May be from a judgeship of top managerial positions in large corporations
