Job: Para Rescuer/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/ Paramedics

Job Description

Para Rescuers (aka EMTs and paramedics) provide immediate medical attention, care and transport to the sick or injured. They determine the nature and extent of the patient’s condition while trying to determine whether the patient has pre-existing medical problems. Following strict rules, they give emergency care depending on their level of training.

Necessary Education

High School Diploma with formal training and certification or an Associate Degree in Applied Science

Helpful High School Courses

Biology, Chemistry, Health, Physical Education, Computer Applications

Working Conditions

  • Work is physically strenuous and stressful
  • Work approximately 50 hours per week, irregular working hours
  • May risk noise-induced hearing loss from sirens and back injuries
  • May be exposed to various diseases such as Hepatitis-B or AIDS

Salary Range

  • 2003, National average annual salary, $27,080
  • 2003, National average hourly wage, $13.02

Career Ladder Information

  • Associate Degree in Applied Science increases earnings
  • With experience and education, may become a supervisor, manager or director of emergency services

  • Have good dexterity and agility as well physical coordination
  • Are able to lift heavy loads
  • Have good eye sight
  • Enjoy excitement and a job that is stressful as well as rewarding
  • Are willing to continue education and take courses every two years
