Job: Adult Literacy & Remedial Education Teacher

Job Description

Adult literacy and remedial education teachers (also known as adult basic education teachers) teach adults and out-of-school youths academic courses, in order for them to become active participants in our society, to hold a job, and to further their education.

Necessary Education

Varies by State and by program; Bachelor’s Degree and preferably a Master’s Degree; some require a teaching certificate

English, Mathematics, Psychology, Computer Applications

Working Conditions

  • Can be rewarding and satisfying
  • Since work is with adult students, typically do not encounter some of the behavioral or social problems sometimes found with younger students
  • May work full-time or part-time
  • May work at night or on weekends to accommodate students with job or family responsibilities

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $44,880
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $21.58

Career Ladder Information

  • Teaching experience, especially with adults, is preferred or may be required
  • The most experienced teachers may mentor new instructors and volunteers
  • Some may go into administrative work, policy work at non-profit organizations, or perform research
  • The education industry employs the majority of these teachers, others may work for State and local governments; job training facilities; non-profit, religious, and social service organizations; residential care facilities; and at worksites
