Job: Athletic Coach and Instructor

Job Description

Athletic Coaches and Instructors teach physical education and team sports. They also help individuals improve their physical fitness.

Necessary Education

School Coaches and Sports Instructors usually have a Bachelor’s Degree. Sometimes certification is required for a specialized area such as aerobics, karate, golf or tennis.

Helpful High School Courses

Biology, Communications, Health, Physical Education, Participation in sports

Working Conditions

  • Work hours are irregular and late afternoon or evening hours are often required
  • May have to travel to sporting events
  • Work is often strenuous
  • May work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $35,530

  • Certification is encouraged
  • Master’s Degree increases opportunities for advancement
