Home Day Care Providers attend to children’s basic needs. In addition, they organize activities that stimulate children’s physical, emotional, intellectual and social growth. When caring for infants they feed and change them.

Business, Child Development, Communications, CPR Course, Health, Mathematics

Working Conditions

  • Usually long hours and flexible schedule; work hours vary widely
  • Home must meet all state requirements for child care
  • Inside and outside play work is required
  • Work can be very stressful
  • Work is never routine
  • Work requires constant standing, walking, bending, stooping and lifting

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $18,320
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $8.81

Career Ladder Information

  • Secondary or post-secondary course in child development is necessary to enter the field
  • Most states have licensing requirements
  • College degree in child development or early childhood education leads to advancement in salary and opportunities
