Job: Recreation Supervisor

Job Description

Recreation supervisors oversee recreation leaders and workers, as well as plan, organize, and manage recreational activities to meet the needs of a variety of populations. They often serve as liaisons between the director of a park or recreation center and the recreation leaders and workers.

Necessary Education

Usually Bachelor’s Degree; possibly certification(s)

Helpful High School Courses

English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Health, Business courses

Working Conditions

  • Usually work about 40 hours a week
  • May work some nights, weekends and irregular hours
  • May work in a number of settings
  • Typically spend most of the day in an office
  • May risk suffering injuries during physical activities, but generally engage in less physical activity than do lower-level recreation workers

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $29,190
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $14.03

Career Ladder Information

  • The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), along with its State chapters, offers certification as a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) for those with a college degree in recreation, and as a Certified Park and Recreation Associate (CPRA) for those with less than 4 years of college
  • Certification and a Master’s Degree may be helpful for those who desire to advanced to administrator positions
