Job: Automotive Technician

Job Description

Automotive Technicians are diagnostic, high tech problem solvers that require the skill of working with traditional hand tools as well as sophisticated computerized equipment and electronics. Technicians inspect, maintain and repair gasoline engines, but high tech sophistication is rapidly changing the job.

Necessary Education

Formal auto tech training program in high school or a post-secondary school

Two-year associate degree from a community college is becoming the norm for automobile maintenance

Helpful High School Courses

Computer Applications, Mathematics, Physics, Reading

Working Conditions

  • Most work a 40-hour work week, but evening hours are often required
  • Work indoors in well ventilated and lighted repair shops
  • Work frequently requires handling dirty and greasy parts in awkward positions
  • Work often requires lifting heavy parts and tools

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $43,980
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $21.14

Career Ladder Information

  • Additional formal training and 2-5 years experience is often required for any further advancement
  • Specialization and certification by Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) in one of eight areas such as electrical systems, brake systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine repair is often needed
  • With leadership skills, technicians can advance to shop supervisor
  • Willingness to continue formal training, special training, certifications throughout careers is necessary
