Job: Mapping Technician

Job Description

Mapping technicians calculate mapmaking information from field notes. They also draw topographical maps and verify accuracy.

Necessary Education

Varies: postsecondary school courses with extensive on-the-job training; Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree

Helpful High School Courses

Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Computer Science

Working Conditions

  • Usually work an 8-hour day, 5 days a week
  • May travel
  • May spend time outdoors and may be exposed to all types of weather
  • Work may be active and sometimes strenuous – may stand and walk considerably

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $30,320
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $14.58

Career Ladder Information

  • The Delaware Society of Professional Surveyors has a voluntary certification program. Many employers require certification for promotion to positions with greater responsibilities.

  • Are in good physical condition (when working as a member of a survey party)
