Job: Plumber
Job Description
Plumbers install and repair the water, waste disposal, drainage and gas systems in homes as well as commercial and industrial buildings. They also install plumbing fixtures.
Necessary Education
High School Diploma and completion of an apprenticeship training program. The training program consist of 4-5 years on the job training and 144 classroom instruction
Helpful High School Courses
Computers Application, Drafting, Mathematics, Science
Working Conditions
- Sometimes work in uncomfortable or cramped positions
- May work outdoor in inclement weather
- Work may involve physical hazards including cuts, burns or possible falls from ladders
- Usually work a standard 40-hour week
- Work may require heavy lifting
- May be required to work evenings or weekends for an emergency

Career Ladder Information
- Many states/localities require passing a licensing exam
- Plumbing training in Armed forces is considered very good preparation

Virtually all plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters undergo some type of apprenticeship training. To be an apprentice, you need to be 18 years old.
