Job: Consultant Dietitian
Job Description
Consultant dietitians work under contract with healthcare facilities or in their own private practice. They help prevent and treat illnesses by promoting healthy eating habits and suggesting diet modifications.
Necessary Education
Bachelors Degree.
Helpful High School Courses
Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Health, English, Business courses, Psychology
Working Conditions
- Office location and hours may vary, depending on the clients being served
- Schedule may include screening and counseling clients, clinical and administrative paperwork, meetings, research, and travel
- May work full- or part-time

Career Ladder Information
- 41 States have laws governing dietetics; most require licensure, some require certification or registration
- The Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) awards the Registered Dietitian credential to those who pass a certification exam after completing their academic coursework and supervised experience
- Some work for wellness programs, sports teams, supermarkets and other nutrition-related businesses, or may consult and advise food service managers
