Job: Dental Assistant

Job Description

Dental assistants perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties. They work under the direction and supervision of dentists.

Necessary Education

On-the-job training and/or other dental assisting program training, depending on State’s regulations

Helpful High School Courses 

English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Health, Business courses

Working Conditions

  • Usually work in a well-lit and clean environment
  • May work evenings or weekends
  • Typically wear gloves, masks, eyewear, and protective clothing to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases
  • Need to follow safety procedures to minimize risks associated with use of radiographic equipment

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $25,690
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $12.35

Career Ladder Information

  • Some States regulate the duties dental assistants may complete through licensure or registration
  • Certification is available through the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB) and is recognized or required in 20 States
  • Certification may be an asset when seeking employment
  • Most work in private dental offices; others may work in dental schools, private and government hospitals, State and local public health departments, or clinics
  • Job opportunities should be good
  • Without further education, advancement opportunities are limited
  • Some may become office managers, dental assisting instructors, or dental product sales representatives
  • Some may return to school to become dental hygienists

Did you know?

Dentists are expected to hire more assistants to perform routine tasks, so that they may devote their own time to more profitable procedures

Dental assistants should not be confused with dental hygienists, who are licensed to perform different clinical tasks
