Job: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Job Description
Emergency Medical Technicians give immediate medical care to the sick and injured and transport them to medical facilities. An EMT often deals with life-or-death situations.
Necessary Education
High School Diploma and a minimum of 120 hours post-secondary training
Helpful High School Courses
Biology, Behavioral Sciences, Health Education
Working Conditions
- Works inside and outside in all kinds of weather
- Work requires bending, kneeling and lifting
- Work is physically strenuous and stressful
- Work hours are irregular
- May be on call and work as much as 45 to 58 hours per week

Career Ladder Information
- With more education, an EMT may become a nurse, doctor or other health-care worker
Personal Qualities and Interest
You:
- Are calm and emotionally stable
- Have good hand-eye coordination
- Have good color vision
- Are physically able to lift and carry heavy loads

- An EMT applicant must be at least 18 years old and have a valid drivers license.
