Job: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Job Description

Emergency Medical Technicians give immediate medical care to the sick and injured and transport them to medical facilities. An EMT often deals with life-or-death situations.

Necessary Education

High School Diploma and a minimum of 120 hours post-secondary training

Helpful High School Courses

Biology, Behavioral Sciences, Health Education

Working Conditions

  • Works inside and outside in all kinds of weather
  • Work requires bending, kneeling and lifting
  • Work is physically strenuous and stressful
  • Work hours are irregular
  • May be “on call” and work as much as 45 to 58 hours per week

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $29,550
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $14.20

Career Ladder Information

  • With more education, an EMT may become a nurse, doctor or other health-care worker

Personal Qualities and Interest

      You:

  • Are calm and emotionally stable
  • Have good hand-eye coordination
  • Have good color vision
  • Are physically able to lift and carry heavy loads

Did you know?

  • An EMT applicant must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license.
