Job: Healthcare Social Worker

Job Description

Healthcare social workers help patients and their families cope with chronic, acute, or terminal illnesses and handle problems that may stand in the way of recovery or rehabilitation. They may counsel patients, organize support groups, advise caregivers, and help plan for patients’ needs after discharge.

Necessary Education

Bachelor’s Degree

Helpful High School Courses 

English, Psychology, Sociology

Working Conditions

  • Usually work a standard 40-hour week
  • Occasionally may work evenings and weekends
  • May experience stress

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $45,880
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $22.06

Career Ladder Information

  • All States and the District of Columbia have licensing, certification, or registration requirements
  • The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) offers voluntary credentials
  • Movement to management, teaching, research and consulting positions, as well as going into private practice, typically require advanced degree(s) and related work experience
