Job: Nurse Practitioner
Job Description
Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses who have met additional educational and clinical practice requirements. They provide basic primary healthcare. Nurse practitioners diagnose and treat common acute illnesses and injuries, and they may also prescribe medications (dependent on the State requirements).
Necessary Education
Usually 1-2 years of graduate education after earning a registered nursing (RN) license
Helpful High School Courses
Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, English, Psychology
Working Conditions
- Usually work in well lighted, comfortable healthcare facilities
- May work nights, weekends, and holidays, and be on-call
- May spend considerable time walking and standing
- Subject to physical injuries when assisting patients
- May face hazards from caustic chemicals, radiation, and infectious diseases
