Job: Dispensing Optician
Job Description
Dispensing Opticians fit eyeglasses and contact lenses, following prescriptions written by ophthalmologist or optometrists. They recommend frames, lenses and coatings after considering the prescription and the customers occupation, habits and facial features.
Necessary Education
High School Diploma and either on-the-job training or a formal apprenticeship
Helpful High School Courses
Algebra, Anatomy, English, Geometry and Mechanical Drawing, Physics
Working Conditions
- Work indoors in attractive, well-lighted offices
- Spend a great deal of time on feet
- Work involves chemicals and machinery hazards of glass cutting
- Most work a 40-hour week; however, working in a retail store may require evening and weekend hours

Career Ladder Information
- Post-secondary training in opticianry can lead to advancements
- Acceptance of lead or management position within an office
