Job: Registered Nurse
Job Description
Registered Nurses care for patients who are ill, help patients maintain health and prevent diseases, and assist physicians. Registered nurses may become hospital nurses, office nurses, public health nurses or industrial nurses. Hospital nurses are usually assigned to surgery, maternity, pediatrics, the emergency room or intensive care.
Necessary Education
Associate Degree or post-secondary training at a nursing school
Helpful High School Courses
Biology, Chemistry, Advanced Mathematics, Psychology, Health Education
Working Conditions
- Usually works in well-lit health facilities
- Requires a great deal of standing and walking
- May often work nights, weekends or holiday shifts
- Work may involve exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous chemicals or radiation

Career Ladder Information
- With more education, registered nurses can advance to nursing supervisor, nurse practitioner, certified nurse anesthetist or certified nurse midwife.
