Job: School Nurse
Job Description
School nurses provide health care to students. They administer first aid treatment; monitor students health (through assessments and evaluations) and maintain their records; provide health education and counseling; and other duties as required.
Necessary Education
Diploma, Associate, or Bachelors Degree dependent on States requirement for Registered Nurses.

Science, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Psychology, English, and Health

Career Ladder Information
- School nurses may be employed by private and public schools and by county and State health departments
- School nurses must be state licensed registered nurses. Also, many States require that school nurses be licensed by the State Board of Education
- Many schools require at least one year of work experience as a registered nurse and prefer those with some teaching experience
- May advance to supervisory or administrative positions, which are mostly found in large schools and school districts
- With additional education and licensure, some may become school nurse practitioners (which leads to a higher pay and complex responsibilities)
- May pursue other nursing specialties, or become a community college instructor or university professor
