Job: Marriage Counselor

Job Description

Marriage Counselors use therapeutic techniques with individuals, groups, and couples for the purpose of resolving conflicts. They modify perceptions and behaviors, and enhance communication and understanding among all family members.

Necessary Education

6-year Master’s Degree

Helpful High School Courses

Social Sciences, Biology, English, Communications, Health

Working Conditions

  • Usually work 40-hour week in an office setting
  • May work non-traditional hours (evenings and weekends to accommodate families in crisis or working couples)
  • Work can be very stressful and require high physical and emotional energy

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $30,800
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $14.81
Career Ladder Information
  • Counselors must participate in graduate studies, workshops and personal studies to maintain their certificates and licenses
  • A Doctoral Degree may increase earnings
  • With advanced education and experience, counselors can become supervisors or administrators in large agencies
