Job Description

Psychologists study the mind and human behavior and they help clients with emotional and mental health concerns. Specialties in this field include clinical, health, counseling, school, industrial-organizational, developmental, social or experimental psychology.

Necessary Education

Bachelor’s Degree

Helpful High School Courses

English, Mathematics, Biology, Social and Behavioral Science, Computer Applications

Working Conditions

  • Work can be in clinics, schools, hospitals, nursing homes or private offices
  • May work regular hours, shift work, evenings and weekends depending on specialty
  • May experience pressure due to deadlines, tight schedules or overtime
  • May be self-employed
  • May work as part of a team of professionals helping a client

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $51,520
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $24.77

  • Specialty and advanced degrees increase earning potential
  • Doctoral Degrees are becoming more and more common and about one-half of psychologists are self-employed
