Job: Urban & Regional Planner
Job Description
Planners develop long and short term land use plans to provide for growth and revitalization of urban, suburban and rural communities. They promote the best use of a communitys land and resources.
Necessary Education
Most entry level positions require a Masters Degree although a Bachelors Degree with experience is sufficient for some positions
Helpful High School Courses
Communications, Computer Applications, English, Mathematics, Science
Working Conditions
- Usually work a 40-hour week, but evening meetings may be required
- Travel may be required to inspect features of land
- May spend most of their time in the field
- Work may require deadlines
- Work may involve political pressure generated by interest groups such as environmentalist

Career Ladder Information
- Advance opportunities are limited without a Masters Degree
- Various computer software models and statistical techniques is necessary
- AICP certification based on education, experience and passing an exam may increase promotion opportunities
