Job: Computer Repairer

Job Description

Computer repairers (also known as data processing equipment repairers) service mainframe, server, and personal computers; printers; and disc drives. They primarily perform hands-on repair, maintenance, and installation of computers and related equipment.

Necessary Education

Certification or training in electronics from Associate Degree programs, the military, vocational schools, or equipment manufacturers is preferred

English, Mathematics, Business courses, Computer Applications

Working Conditions

  • Usually work in clean, well-lit, air-conditioned, and well-ventilated surroundings
  • Work hours may vary and include evenings, weekends and holidays
  • May use a variety of tools for diagnostic tests and repair
  • Must lift equipment and work in a variety of postures
  • Field repairers typically travel frequently
  • Need to follow safety guidelines, such as wearing protective goggles when needed

  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $24.90
Career Ladder Information
  • Job prospects should be best for applicants with basic knowledge of electronics and equipment repair. Some on-the-job training is generally given to new repairers on specific equipment
  • Bench technicians typically work in repair shops located in stores, factories, or service centers
  • Field technicians typically travel to customers’ work places or other locations to make necessary repairs and perform preventive maintenance
  • The Computing Technology Industry Association (Comp TIA), the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET) and the Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) provide various certification programs
  • After successfully working on basic equipment, computer repairers may advance to the following positions: maintaining more sophisticated systems; becoming specialists who help diagnose problems, design equipment, or develop maintenance procedures; moving into management, customer service, or sales positions (possibly supervising others); opening their own repair shops; or becoming wholesalers or retailers of electronic equipment

  • Have good communications skills
  • Have a neat appearance (particularly for field technicians)
  • Have a driver’s license (particularly for field technicians)
  • Enjoy working with computers
