Job: Software Engineer

Job Description

Computer Software Engineers design, develop, test and evaluate software systems for computers. Software engineers may do programming, but are more concerned with developing algorithms, and analyzing and solving programming problems than with actually writing code.

Necessary Education

Most employers prefer a Bachelor’s Degree

Helpful High School Courses

Advanced Mathematics, Computer Applications, English, Science, Co-Op or Internship in the computer field.

Working Conditions

  • Most work a 40-hour work week, but overtime is usually required
  • Most work in well-lighted and comfortable offices of labs
  • May have problems with eyestrain, back discomfort and carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Many have to interact with customers and co-workers

Salary Range

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $73,090
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $35.14

Career Ladder Information

  • Master’s Degree and Professional certifications are necessary for advancement
  • May move into project manager or chief information office in positions
