Job Description

Astronomers use the principles of physics and mathematics to learn about the fundamental nature of the universe. They solve problems in navigation, space flight and satellite communications. Astronomers may do research.

Necessary Education

  • Doctoral Degree is usually required
  • Some positions available with Master’s Degree

Helpful High School Courses

Advanced Mathematics, Computer Technology, Economics, English, Physics

Working Conditions

  • Usually work normal hours, but often long hours are required
  • May work in laboratories or offices
  • May spend long periods of time in observatories
  • Traveling to remote locations may be required
  • Routine night work can be stressful

Salary Range

  • 2003, National average annual salary, $83,440
  • 2003, National average hourly wage, $40.12

Career Ladder Information

  • Master’s Degree may qualify one for positions in manufacturing and applied research
  • Doctoral Degree may qualify one for research and teaching at the university level
  • Post-Doctoral work specializing in such areas as optics, radio astronomy and crystallography increase earning capacity
