Job: Chemical Technician

Job Description

Chemical technicians work with chemists and chemical engineers, developing and using chemicals and related products and equipment. They mostly do research and development, testing or other laboratory work.

Necessary Education

Associate Degree or a minimum of 2 years of specialized training.

Working Conditions

  • May work with toxic chemicals or radioactive isotopes, but should pose little risk if proper safety procedures are followed
  • Work hours are dependent on employment facility

Career Ladder Information
  • Technicians usually begin work in routine positions, under the direct supervision of a scientist or a more experienced technician
  • As technicians gain more experience, they typically take on more responsibilities under general supervision and may eventually become supervisors
