Job: Clinical Laboratory Technician

Job Description

Clinical laboratory technicians perform less complex tests and laboratory procedures than technologists. Technicians may prepare specimens, operate automated analyzers, or perform manual tests following detailed instructions

Necessary Education

Associate’s Degree or Certificate

Helpful High School Courses

Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computer Applications

Working Conditions

  • Laboratories are usually well-lit and clean, but may have fumes
  • May spend much of the day standing
  • Hours and working conditions vary according to the size and type of employer, may work evenings, weekends, or holidays
  • Usually work under the supervision of medical and clinical laboratory technologists or laboratory managers
  • Often use protective masks, gloves, and goggles
  • Typically few hazards exist, when following proper methods of infection control and sterilization

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $29,580
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wages, $14.22
Career Ladder Information
  • About half of the positions have been in hospitals, and the remaining jobs are found in medical laboratories, physicians’ offices, clinics, blood banks, research and testing laboratories, and in the Federal Government
  • Certification is required for most jobs and often is necessary for advancement
  • Technicians can become technologists through additional education and experience

  • Have good analytical judgment
  • Are detail-oriented
  • Have good problem solving skills
  • Have good manual dexterity and normal color vision
  • Are able to work under pressure
  • Have computer skills

Did you know?

  • Clinical laboratory technicians may work in several areas of the clinical laboratory or specialize in just one - such as phlebotomists, who collect blood samples.
