Job: Grounds Maintenance Worker

Job Description

Grounds maintenance workers perform a variety of tasks necessary to achieve a pleasant and functional outdoor environment. They may also care for indoor gardens and plantings in commercial and public facilities, such as malls, hotels, and botanical gardens.

No formal education usually required for entry-level positions

Working Conditions

  • Typically perform most of work outdoors
  • Many jobs are seasonal
  • Often work with little supervision
  • Can be physically demanding and repetitive
  • May experience pressure to meet deadlines
  • Must exercise safety precautions, when working with chemicals, tools, and equipment

  • Wages for beginners are typically low and the work is physically demanding
  • Short-term on-the-job training is usually provided

  • The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) offers certification programs to groundskeepers and grounds managers

  • Have physical stamina, and able to work hard and quickly
  • Are able to get along with people
  • Have a good driving record (if part of the job)
