Job: Meteorologist/Atmospheric Scientist

Job Description

Meteorologists study the atmosphere’s physical characteristics, motion and processes. They study information on air pressure, temperature, humidity and wind velocity; and apply physical and mathematical relationships to make short- and long-range weather forecasts. They use satellites, radar and sophisticated computer models of the world’s atmosphere to make their forecast.

Working Conditions

  • Work can involve night, weekend and holidays
  • Overtime may be required during weather emergencies
  • Work sites include airports, remote areas and even in aircrafts
  • Those not involved in forecasting, work regular hours, usually in offices

Salary Range

  • 2003, National average annual salary, $65,590
  • 2003, National average hourly wage, $31.53
Career Ladder Information
  • A Master’s Degree enhances employment opportunities
  • A Ph.D. is required for most research positions
  • Excellent communication skills open more opportunities such as broadcasting weather on television
  • Professional certification may be obtained by passing a written test and having a minimum of five years experience
