Job: Physicist

Job Description

Most physicists work in research and development. They explore and identify basic principles governing the structure and behavior of matter, the generation and transfer of energy, and the interaction of matter and energy. They may use their findings in theories or apply them in practical areas.

Necessary Education

Usually a Doctoral Degree for research and development positions; however, a Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree may qualify for other types of jobs needing a physics background.

Working Conditions

  • Often work regular hours in laboratories and offices
  • May work longer or irregular hours to meet project deadlines

Career Ladder Information
  • Typically individuals with a Physics Degree at any level will find their skills useful for entry to many other occupations
  • Individuals who meet State certification requirements can become high school physics teachers
  • Additional experience and training in a postdoctoral research appointment is important for physicists who desire permanent positions in basic research at universities and government laboratories
