Job Description

Veterinary Technicians help with routine laboratory and clinical procedures for animals. They often supervise the care and handling of animals and work under the direct supervision of a veterinarian.

Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Applications

Working Conditions

  • Work a regular work week with some evening and weekend hours
  • Usually work indoors, though may work outdoors depending on the animal
  • Work may be physically and emotionally demanding
  • Work setting may be noisy
  • Work often involves kneeling, crawling and repeated bending

  • 2003, Delaware average annual salary, $24,480
  • 2003, Delaware average hourly wage, $11.77

Career Ladder Information

  • The first step on the ladder would be veterinarian assistant or animal caretaker, requiring no college
  • The second step is the technician requiring an Associate Degree
  • The most advanced step is the veterinarian requiring a Medical Degree in veterinary science
